Bay Area Drama Company is excited to announce auditions for its next theatrical production over Zoom - Poile Sengupta's Thus Spake Shoorpanakha, So Said Shakuni, directed by Mahesh Dattani. This is a chance to work with a world-class director, on a terrific play.

Show dates and times and a short blurb about the play can be found on our website here. There are only two roles in the play and we are auditioning for both of them. These are:

  • MAN - South Asian. Any accent. Appears 45-55.

  • WOMAN - South Asian. Any accent. Appears 45-55.

For the first round of auditions, we invite actors to send in a 1-2 minute video of a dramatic monologue in English. For the role of Shoorpanakha please include some stances similar to the Koodiyattam style in this sample video and for Shakuni, the kind of movement from 0:54 in this video. The movement can be within the monologue or recorded separately.

Shortlisted actors will be called back for a personal audition over Zoom.

Rehearsals will be held over Zoom and are tentatively scheduled for Tue, Wed, Thu, Sun at 7pm Pacific starting end of September. These days are indicative at this time. Performance dates are on the show page. To submit your audition video you must be available for all performance dates and substantially all rehearsals.

There are some additional requirements as well:

  1. A stable computer (Mac or Windows OS) with a multi-core processor (Intel i5 or better - with a processing speed greater than 3GHz) and at least 8GB RAM. In-built webcams and microphones are desirable.

  2. A reliable internet connection with at least 3mbps upload and 10mbps download.

  3. A minimum 12'x10' of clear space at home in which to rehearse and perform.

  4. The performance space must be noise-free during rehearsals and performances.

  5. Permission for technical crew members to remotely access and operate your computer during rehearsal and performance. For this reason, using a personal computer is preferable to your work computer.

  6. Other equipment (green screens, lights, external mics, external  webcams, props) will be provided by BADCo as needed. Actors must be willing to put in additional time outside of rehearsals to focus on tech-setup, sets/props arrangement, costumes etc.

  7. The audition is open to anyone in North America. But we will prefer actors in the Bay Area.

The last date for submission was 8pm Sunday, September 20. Audition submissions are now closed.
