डिवाइडेड बाय - BADCo’s 1st Hindi Play!

At BAD Company, we couldn't be more excited to present our first ever production in Hindi - Divided By - an original play by our own Basab Pradhan. Divided By will also be staged in English. There will be 3 performances in each language.

To date, we have performed all our work in English. So why Hindi now? Simple. Our focus as artists has always been to put the story first. The backdrop of Divided By, both physically and politically, is set in Delhi. The characters are from the Hindi heartland. The Hindi speaking belt comes with its own rich culture and flavor. Many nuances when the characters are speaking in Hindi, like idiomatic humor, symbolism and so on, are often lost in translation. Authenticity has always been of crucial importance to us. So it came about that Basab wrote the script first in Hindi and then translated it later into English. Having grown up in North India – Haryana, Delhi and UP – he is fluent in Hindi. The flow of conversational Hindi therefore came naturally to him.

Being more authentic was one reason. The other was our desire to do Hindi language theater. Basab and Sindu have both performed on stage in many Hindi plays prior to starting BAD Company. Having established our credentials in English over these past 5 years, we were drawn to the new and exciting challenge of presenting a play in Hindi under our own banner.
