We Made a Hat

“Starting on a hat
Finishing a hat
Look, I made a hat
Where there never was a hat”

Sunday in the Park with George. Lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim, a lyricist and composer widely credited with reinventing American musical theatre, died on November 26.

In this song, Finishing the Hat, the artist Georges Seurat, is lamenting the loneliness of creating art. And while theatre is not as lonely an art form, the drive, the near compulsion to not rest before it is finished, is the same.

We made a hat.

From just an idea, of telling the stories of South Asian immigrants like us, we created an entire show of short plays - Our Stories - in two languages, English and Tamil.

People came. They loved the show. They told their friends who also came. We had six packed performances.

We made a hat. Where there never was a hat.

Thank you for coming in great numbers. Thank you for your enthusiasm at curtain calls and when we met you outside. Thank you for spreading the word.

And to those of you who would have wanted to come but couldn’t because you are being careful, we understand. This virus is going to fizzle out soon. Science will kick its ass. And when it does, we’ll be right here, waiting to welcome you back.

Till next time,
